In 2016, the summer before his sophomore year, Ryley Hopper ’20, ’22M suffered a spinal cord injury in his friend’s pool. The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down.
After an extensive recovery — and with the support of his mother and community — Hopper continued his undergraduate education at UNCW earning a degree in business administration in 2020. Despite his setbacks, he earned Dean’s List and graduated with the Cum Laude distinction. He later earned his master's degree in finance and investment management in 2022.
After entering the professional world, Hopper wanted to begin driving again. In August of 2024, he got behind the wheel of a specially equipped car — a monumental moment for Hopper because he had not operated a car since before the accident.
Hopper’s story caught the attention of Good Morning America, where he shared his recovery journey and motivations to regain his abilities. His grit and determination serve to inspire others to persevere through uncertainty.
