Rebecca Spiegel ’20 published her debut memoir “Without Her” in September 2024. The memoir chronicles Spiegel’s search for answers after learning of her younger sister’s suicide and unpacks family history, documents the last traces of her sister’s life, and questions what more she could have done to prevent her death. Unflinchingly honest, Spiegel lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one.
In an interview with DIRT, Spiegel tells Michael Colbert ’22 — whom she met at UNCW’s Creative Writing MFA — “It still takes me aback that what I wrote was a tribute to my sister. I want other people who are experiencing something like this to have something to hold on to. It turns out that those two things can go together.”
Spiegel teaches writing in Philadelphia, where she lives with her family.
