Nico Mancuso '16 and Austin Bates '16 Launch App Roshi

February 11, 2025 | Sarah Carter '26

Nico Mancuso ’16 and Austin Bates ’16 are revolutionizing the way students develop important skills with their app Roshi. Mancuso, an accomplished baseball player, was searching for a way to give lessons to children. He began designing a website to showcase his abilities when he was struck with an idea of something bigger.

Mancuso and Bates created a platform for university students to offer their skills to local school-age children. Instead of posting in Facebook groups, this app allows university students to create profiles as instructors for a variety of subjects such as sports, music, art and school subjects. They can then connect with parents to schedule lessons. The intent is that university students act as role models for young learners.

Roshi has changed the way accomplished university students connect with aspiring learners. The app is currently available for UNCW students and Wilmington locals, with plans of expanding to more universities in the near future. The Roshi team meets with each prospective instructor to verify their credibility before working with children.

This innovative startup demonstrates Mancuso’s and Bates’s dedication to finding impactful solutions that create brighter futures for children and university students. Learn more about Roshi and follow the company’s journey on Instagram.
