Just graduating this past December, Kennedy Cole ’24 has signed an impressive two-book deal with Penguin Random House’s Berkley Books – marking the debut of her novel “There Used to Be People.”

The book, to release in Spring 2026, follows the journey of the only Black detective in a 1970s Mississippi police department – delving into themes of race, queerness, and societal change. Cole’s work is notable for its hopeful tone, despite its dark and supernatural elements, and aims to highlight marginalized voices.

In addition to her book deal, Cole has also signed with a film agent, with hopes of bringing her story to the big screen.

During her time at UNCW, Cole earned her BFA in Creative Writing and a certificate in publishing. She also served as copy editor and was a contributing writer for The Seahawk. Cole is currently an intern for Blair Publishing, an independent, nonprofit publisher based in Durham, NC.

Keep your eyes on Cole’s Instagram for updates and follow her career journey and connect on LinkedIn.
