Alumni Business Owner: Carter Jewell ’13, ’15M

“There’s a lot more diversity in this industry and space. It’s also healthier and the ingredients are great. There aren’t a lot of added fillers.”

It will always be the first, but the trend Carter Jewell ’13, ’15M began means her store may not be the last. The founder and CEO of Mocksie Craft Mocktails, Jewell opened the first non-alcoholic bar and bottle shop in Eastern North Carolina.

Jewell recognizes that people choose not to drink for many different, deeply personal reasons. Her store provides customers the opportunity to support a local, woman-owned business all while sampling featured weekly beverages, buying a single can, mixing-and-matching a six-pack and learning how to be a home bartender.

“I wanted a place where you can come, pay $4, order one beer and see what you think. If you don’t like it, buy another one," she said. "Our primary industry is non-profit fundraisers and events, but we’re now open Thursday-Sunday because people want to stock their home bar.”

Mocksie, just like Jewell’s alma mater and the city of Wilmington, is growing one step at a time and looking forward to the continued opportunities that are discovered.
