Why are @alum.uncw.edu email accounts being disabled?

From May 2008 through 2014, alumni emails (@alum.uncw.edu accounts) were provided to new graduates through a beta program to test interest. The use of these email accounts has steadily declined due to the prevalence of free email resources and user preferences. This inactivity can lead to accounts not being properly safeguarded, making them vulnerable to malicious intent.

In response to the lack of interest and increased security concern, UNCW is phasing out any remaining @alum.uncw.edu accounts.

When will alumni email accounts be disabled?

All @alum.uncw.edu email accounts will be disabled on August 1, 2023, and will no longer be accessible.

What do I need to do?

Identify an alternative email address
  • If you do not already have an alternative email, set up an account with a reputable email service, such as Outlook or Gmail.
Update your contacts and services
  • Take inventory of contacts who use your @alum.uncw.edu email address and provide them with your updated information so you can continue communicating without interruption. Prior to your @alum.uncw.edu account being disabled, you could also add your new email to your signature or enable an autoresponse so contacts who email you will be notified of your new contact information.
  • Consider any subscriptions that use your @alum.uncw.edu address and transfer them to another email. Common examples include services like Apple, Spotify and Facebook. Consult these providers' documentation for steps to move your account to a new email address.
Save or move emails (optional)
  • Option 1: If you have Microsoft Outlook or another email program on your computer, you can add your @alum.uncw.edu account to it and copy messages to an archive (.PST file). See Microsoft’s guide to set up your account and copy your messages. If you have both your old and new accounts in Outlook, you can drag and drop directly into the new account.
  • Option 2: Save each email as a PDF and download it to your computer or upload it to an online file storage service like OneDrive. 
  • Option 3: Forward messages from your @alum.uncw.edu email account to another email account.

How do I know if I have an alumni email account that will be disabled August 1?

Only alumni who graduated between May 2008 and May 2014 had the option to activate an @alum.uncw.edu email account.

If you have not logged in to an @alum.uncw.edu email account serviced by Microsoft Outlook since January 1, 2022, then your account is not active and has been previously disabled. No further action is necessary.
